1. What is IESD?
IESD stands for Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Tongji University jointly established the UNEP-Tongji IESD in May 2002. One of the main objectives of UNEP-Tongji IESD is to develop educational programmes to build research, technical and managerial skills, and capacity in developing countries.

2. What is Asia-Pacific Leadership Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development?
Asia-Pacific Leadership Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development is designed, as a collaborative effort of the Asia-Pacific Regional University Consortium, to provide environmental training for emerging leaders from the Asia-Pacific region. It is one-week-long programme including field trips, case studies, interactive exercises and participant presentations.

3. What are the objectives of the Leadership Programme?

The objectives are:

  • To provide the participants an opportunity in broadening their knowledge on the 3 dimensions of sustainability:
    • Human dimensions: mind, body, soul;
    • Environment dimensions: air, water, land;
    • Sustainable development dimensions: social, environment, economy.
  • To establish a leadership network in the Asia-Pacific region on sustainable development.
4. Where and when will the 2005 Leadership Programme be convened?
It will be convened in Shanghai and Wuxi, China, during 18-24 September 2006.

5. Who would most benefit from the Leadership Programme?
We believe mid to senior level officials from government, leaders from non-governmental organizations and the private sector will benefit most from the programme. In the 2004 Leadership Programme, 35 emerging leaders from 25 countries in the region participated. In 2005, 25 emerging leaders from 15 countries in the region participated in the programme.

6. Is financial support available?
Limited financial resources will be made available to support candidates from developing countries, including the support for air-travel to and from Shanghai, living and accommodation expenses, as well as expenses associated with training materials and field visits. Self-funded applicants are highly encouraged to apply as well.

7. What do I need to do to apply?

A complete application includes:
  • Completed 2006 Application Form.
  • One page typed essay listing relevant qualifications, leadership experience and achievements
  • Resume (no more than 2 page)
  • Two letters of reference highlighting your achievements and/or experience

8. Where can I get the 2005 Application Form?
It can be downloaded from the UNEP-Tongji Leadership Program website at http://www.rrcap.unep.org/uneptg06/

9. Who should write the letters of reference?
The reference letters should be from either academic or professional referees detailing your strengths and experience. It is preferred that letters be on professional letterhead and signed on a sealed envelope.

10. When is the deadline?
Applications should be received by 7 August (Monday) 2006.

11. When and how will I be notified about the decision?
On 21 August (Monday) 2006, an announcement of "selected participants" will be posted on the UNEP-Tongji Leadership Programme website at http://www.rrcap.unep.org/uneptg06/

13. I am currently a student. Am I still eligible for the programme?
We normally do not consider current undergraduate or master’s students eligible for the Leadership Programme. We believe mid to senior level officials from government, leaders from non-governmental organizations and the private sector will benefit most from the programme.

14. Do I need additional documents for the financial support?
If you submit the necessary documents for general application, we will review them both for participation and financial support.

15. Should I submit hard copy of documents for the application?
Electronic/scanned copies of documents will be sufficient for the application.
