Gender Issues |
Issue Cultural values often put rural women in subservient roles but they carry much of the burden of food cultivation and harvesting and most of the child raising. This has implications to their education and, in-turn, the level of understanding/knowledge of their children.
Background Rural women have a low social position, inadequate work skills, and poor awareness of methods for sustainable use of natural resources. This is caused by traditional social organizations and the ineffectiveness of development plans and projects in improving the situation of rural women. Because of their roles, rural women often suffer from decreased social welfare and are often involved in the unsustainable use of natural resources. |
