Forests

In early 1999, the total area of forest land was 19 million hectares, accounting for 58% of the total area of 33.2 million hectares of natural land for the whole country, while the actual forest cover comprised 28.8%. This means that around only half the total area of the forestry is covered by existing forests at present. At the same time deforestation, which is the main factor for environmental degradation that negatively influences community livelihood and socio-economic development of the country, is still a widespread problem in Vietnam.
