Thailand
Sustainable Development Strategy for Thailand Sustainable development has become increasingly important to the Royal Kingdom of Thailand. Past economic growth that lacked careful planning and consideration of the environment has created problems regarding the destruction of the natural environment and the unsustainable management of natural resources. This in turn has led to an increase in social conflict arising from the unequal possession and decision-making participation in development. These reasons, coupled with an accumulation of inappropriate production and consumption behaviors have pushed the Thai lifestyle out of balance and has put development on an unsustainable path. However, mechanisms do exist to reverse this trend. Thailand, as a member of the United Nations, has ratified the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation(JPOI)at the World Summit for Sustainable Development (2002), following from commitment to the Rio Declaration (1992) and Agenda 21(1992). Moreover, the National Council for Sustainable Development was established in 2003 based on government resolution to formulate policy and development measures and coordinate implementation aspects from the two Earth Summits. As of 2006, the national policy and planning developments of Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Board have been revised to conform with the UN’s framework on Sustainable Development. These include the Ninth and Tenth National Economic and Social Development Plan(2000-2006)and(2007-2010) respectively, and the implementation of Agenda 21 (1992) and Local Agenda 21(1992) during the past ten years(1997-2006). The country has also formulated a guidance manual on the National Sustainable Development Strategies covering the period of 2007 to 2036, based on the JPOI as a conceptual framework and on the Tenth National Economic and Social Development Plan beginning in 2006.
