Sri Lanka
Sustainable Development Strategy for Sri Lanka The island nation of Sri Lanka hosts a growing population and has experienced positive rates of economic growth and poverty alleviation on national levels within the last two decades. Now this emerging economy in South Asia faces the challenge to translate the concept of sustainable development into strategic actions in order to ensure transfer for intra-generational equity, particularly the needs to strike a balance between rapid economic growth and demands of a growing population, as well as the need to be resource efficient in the wake of increasing pressures of limited natural resource base. In response to this SD challenge, Sri Lanka has adopted several international agreements on sustainable development and environmental protection at the United Nations Conference for Economic Development (UNCED) and the World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD). It has also ratified the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s). In line with the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI), Sri Lanka committed to develop a national sustainable development strategy (NSDS) alongside its adopting Agenda 21. Meeting Reports
