Sustainable Development Strategy for Pakistan

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan prioritizes poverty reduction as one of the major issues for sustainable development along with challenges from the sectors, such as: natural resource management, education, health, industrial growth, access to science and technology, political and social harmony and conflicts, disaster-management, and urbanization.  Pakistan has adopted several international agreements on sustainable development and environmental protection at the United Nations Conference for Economic Development (UNCED) and World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD) and has ratified the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s).  In line with the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI), Pakistan committed to develop a national sustainable development strategy (NSDS) alongside adopting Agenda 21.  The Medium-Term Development Framework (MTDF 2005-2010) is being structured around the MDGs, with government reporting to be in line with MDG targets to address poverty reduction, gender mainstreaming and environmental concerns.  The MTDF 2005-10 is an important step in the achievement of Vision 2030 which aims at a “developed, industrialized, just and prosperous Pakistan through rapid and sustainable development in a resource constrained economy by deploying knowledge inputs.
