South Asia
Sustainable Development Strategy for South Asia The region adopted several international agreements on sustainable development and environmental protection at the United Nations Conference for Economic Development (UNCED) and World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD) and has ratified the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s). In line with the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI), sub-regional priority issues for SD were published and regular ministerial-level meetings were held to identify sub-regional environmental issues and consider the ways to address them. South Asian State of Environment Reports were subsequently developed to assist with assessment of sub-regional environmental outlook. The 13th South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit endorsed recommendations of the Independent South Asian Commission on Poverty Alleviation (ISACPA) Report; Our Future, Our Responsibility (2003). There are 22 separate goals under 4 different areas and these set out policy targets for South Asian Governments to meet between 2005 and 2010. They are designed to be in-line with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to be customized for South Asia and recommend processes associated with the targets. The priorities for action identified in the ISACPA would be used to work out regional initiatives in this area. Meeting Reports
