Sustainable Development Strategy for Kyrgyz Republic

The Kyrgyz Republic as a fully engaged member of the world society, accepts its responsibilities on implementation of the tasks emanating from Agenda XXI, Declaration of Millennium Summit (New-York, 2000) and the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg 2002).  The Kyrgyz Republic is party to 13 International Environmental Conventions.  As of now, the Kyrgyz Republic has implemented a number of measures towards achieving the sustainable development in the country.  Firstly, a Sustainable Human Development Strategy was adopted in 1997, this strategy showed the necessity of sustainable development.  However, at that time Kyrgyz Republic did not have enough capacity for its full implementation as the country had just come out of a deep economic slump and there was more critical issues related to economic development in the agenda.  But by 2002, both Agenda 21 and the “Review of the Kyrgyz Republic Progress to Sustainable Development” were approved by Governmental Decree.  This has been followed by the publication and endorsement of the “Concept of Environmental Security of Kyrgyz Republic” and the “Country Development Strategy” (CDS), which outlines the midterm vision of the Kyrgyz Republic and determines major directions of development and country activities in 2007-2010, both of which were approved in 2007.
