Professor Pei was elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1999 and the Third World Academy of Sciences in 2001. In 2006, he was elected deputy director of the Life Sciences and Medicine Division in the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
He also took on additional responsibilities as the editor-in-chief of Cell Research since Jan 2006. Professor Pei is the chief scientist in the National 973 Project and leads the National Key Scientific Research Program "Developmental Biology and Reproduction".
He also serves as deputy director of the Academic Degrees Committee in the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, president of the Chinese Society for Cell Biology, chairman of the Asian-Pacific Organization for Cell Biology, and vice chairman of the Consortium for Globalization of Chinese Medicine. Prof. Pei was hired as an honorary professor by Tongji University in June 2006, and was appointed president of Tongji University on August 16, 2007.
