Project details

Sri Lanka
The "Damniyangama" eco-village was inaugurated in Lagoswata village in Kalutara district on 28th March, 2006 by the President of Sri Lanka, H.E.Mahinda Rajapaksa. The project was executed as part of the tsunami reconstruction project, by Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement with the active support and guidance of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. It consists of 57 houses and associated common facilities. The project has implemented passive cooling techniques, solar panels on houses, segregation of waste, composting of bio-degradable waste, recycling of inorganic waste, sub-terra system for recycling waste water, and roof top water harvesting. Site layout and landscaping has been done to minimize disturbances to site, provide shading and improve indoor ventilation. The activities were carried out with the active participation of the community, both in the construction work and in some aspects of the design. Committees have been formed within the community, to take care of maintenance and for encouraging community feeling. Currently, the design of the community centre is being completed.

Indonesia
UNEP supported the Ministry of Environment (MoE) in Indonesia to design and construct a pilot eco-house in the old Labuy Village and a new Labuy village in Banda Aceh. UNEP supported the topography survey, site plan, and comprehensive master plan for the village that will be built on 50 hectares of land secured by the Aceh and Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR). UNEP will also support the construction of different types of demonstration eco-houses in this eco-village. Based on these eco-houses, the BRR will replicate more than 250 eco-homes in the new Labuy Village from 2007.
