"Seal the Deal" is a worldwide campaign by the United Nations on Climate Change. It is also known as the "Climate Petition".
The Climate Petition is a consolidation of global appeals for a definitive agreement on Climate Change. This will be presented to the world leaders meeting in Copenhagen in December 2009.
The Petition reads:
"We the Peoples of the World Urge Political Leaders to:
Seal the Deal at COP15 on a climate agreement that is definitive, equitable and effective;
Set binding targets to cut greenhouse gases by 2020;
Establish a framework that will bolster the climate resilience of vulnerable countries and protect lives and livelihoods; and
Support developing countries' adaptation efforts and secure climate justice for all"
On the occasion of two historic events, AIT’s 50th Anniversary and AIT/UNEP RRC.AP's 20th Anniversary, “Seal the Deal” will be the focus of a special one-day campaign at AIT on Tuesday, 8 September 2009.
The objective is to gather as many signatures as possible, to represent voices of the AIT community - staff, students, alumni, and guests.
Two Seal the Deal campaign stations will be set up as follows:
(1)at the AITCC lobby (8:00-17:00 hrs); and (2)at the AIT Grand Party (18:00-22:00 hrs)
You are cordially invited to visit the Seal the Deal campaign stations on 8 September 2009 and add your voice to the Climate Petition.
To lead by example and to move towards the goal of Carbon Neutrality, AIT/UNEP Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP) is now implementing energy efficiency and resource conservation measures in its office in the third floor of the Outreach Building, located inside the campus of Asian Institute of Technology. On 21 August 2009, the Low Carbon Office of RRC.AP was inaugurated by Dr Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Under-Secretary General of the United Nations.
The new low carbon office is expected to witness a 40 per cent reduction in energy consumption and an annual decrease of 50 tonnes of Carbon dioxide emissions. The office has been insulated in order to reduce its cooling load, and in addition a new air conditioning system with heat exchangers has been installed, which minimizes energy loss. Further energy consumption reduction will be provided by the replacement of the existing lighting devices with energy efficient ones, and other measures will ensure better air circulation and comfort.
